Description

This image was originally produced by photographer James E. West for his series "Views of the North Family Shakers at Mt. Lebanon, New York. These images, in the format of cabinet cards, were originally produced in cooperation with the North Family and were available to purchase in the family's store. Later, when the postal card craze began at he turn of the c20th, either with or without West's permission, other photographers used the cabinet card images on postcards, certainly without attributing it to the original photographer. The photograph shows Elder Daniel Offord removing or placing clothes in a centrifugal extractor where either they will be or have been spun to remove water prior to drying.
