Description

Circular basket of black ash splint. Area about 1" in diameter at bottom is open hexagonal weave. Remainder has uprights that are 1/16" wide and weavers that are (.03"?) wide. Rim is edged with white skiver.

Notes

Made in the Mount Lebanon Church Family shop to "furnish" a sewing work stand, which would be fitted with very small baskets to hold needles and other sewing goods. Published in "Shaker Baskets & Poplarware, Vol. III" (1992).

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
