Bench or stool used at the Wash House, North Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Description

Low bench of pine (probably white, Pinus strobus) with angled legs set into top and secured with wire nails. Outside arrises of legs are chamfered. Top is a single board with a cleat nailed to each end the full width of the top. These ends are rounded over. Bench is painted, probably a mustard yellow.

Notes

This bench was used next to the laundry press at the North Family Wash House for storage of the wood panels used in the press between layers of linens. It can be seen in this HABS photograph, taken in June 1938 by N. E. Baldwin, showing the press: https://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ny0539.photos.115447p/

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
