Description

B/W copy of photograph 1959.11400.1. View of a model of a hand-operated wash mill or washing machine, similar though not identical to washing machine 1958.10731.1 in the museum's collection. The model has a metal hand crank which turns two wood agitator arms up and down in a tub with a semi-circular bottom. The model is posed on a stone staircase of the Sabbathday Lake dwelling house.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
