Saddlemaker's vise bench

Description

Leatherworking bench with a foot treadle. The bench has four lap-jointed legs which sit wider than the bench seat. The legs have a stretcher on each short side and a single stretcher in the middle which has a rectangular foot treadle set to one side. The treadle has a leather strap looped through and continues up and around the bench and through the vise. The vise has two wooden jaws which are rectangular at the base and are shaped to have curved edges and a neck which squares on the inside and has a curved exterior. It has a metal hinge on one side. The vise is set into the bench seat. The seat is 6 1/2" w and grows in width to 10 1/4" at the opposite end. The small end has a piece of metal attached.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
