Oval box, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:
1950.1501.1a,b
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

The box (a) and lid (b) bands are of steam-bent maple with swallowtails, two on the box and one on the lid, secured by white tacks. Header of white pine secured by copper shoe pegs, some replaced with copper tacks. Box bottom seems to be held by iron nails, both cut and wire. Box cut down at the top, leaving a partial swallowtail. Dark stain finish.

Notes

This box was originally a lidded carrier with a fixed steam-bent handle attached to the outside walls of the box. The handle was removed and the box cut down in height from the top . Some of the copper pegs were replaced by copper tacks. Although lid fits box snugly, there are no shadows or rub marks on lid sides where carrier handle would have been.
