Description

Circular basket of blanched black ash splint. Uprights 3/8" - 1/2" and weavers 9/16" wide. Split rim with double lashing. Double grip "ear" handles 1" high and 1/8" wide, double-notched, and come down on the outside. Base is slightly raised with weavers in a circular pattern and a split upright in the center that is 1 7/8" in diameter.

Notes

Small basket that looks like a miniaturized version of a work basket; according to the accession records, baskets such as this were made for sale as souvenirs in the Church Family Store.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
