Rattan two-handled basket, Hancock, MA

Description

Basket. Lidded, oval, light-colored rattan basket decreases in size toward base. Single lashing rims. Raised, oval lid of woven rattan and has a 7 1/4" x 2 1/2" rectangular design of straight strips in the center. Two movable handles of rattan wrapped in ash, and attached centrally at each side.

Notes

According to accession records, Eldress Emma B. King of the Canterbury, NH Shakers stated that the Shakers made baskets in this style, but this basket is European-made, possibly German.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
