Description

Forge (.1) constructed of marble blocks, bricks and mortar. A box of pine is attached to the cast side which serves as a plenum for air from the bellows. Air apparently is forced into the fire pit of the forge via conduits hidden by plenum on west side, an iron plate is secured to west face which stands above forge surfaces. (.2a) Forge bellows of wood, leather (replaced), iron and steel; top and bottom painted red, battens holding leather painted black. (.2b) Bellows pump handle of forged iron with flattened head (roughly circular) and 3/4" hole in center. Other end forged to a tang which impales a turned walnut handle with an iron ferrule.

Shane Rothe

Curatorial Associate

Shane Rothe (they/them) joined Shaker Museum in July 2023, working with independent curator Maggie Taft on an exhibition for the new museum space in Chatham. Shane is an artist as well as a curator and continues to create in the mediums of painting, sculpture, writing, and performance. Shane holds a BFA from CalArts and an MA in art history and curatorial studies from the University of Chicago.
