Basket handle or "ear" of hickory (Carya spp.). The bend of the handle is flat on top and rounded on the inside. A step carved into the inside surfaces on either side above the notches abruptly ends the half-moon cross-sectional shape and it becomes rectangular. Below the notches, the widths taper to nothing at the bottom.
